How to Replace the Alternator on a 1997 Ford Explorer

    Removing the Alternator

    • 1). Disconnect the battery ground cable.

    • 2). Remove the air cleaner outlet tube.

    • 3). Release tension to the drive belt by rotating the belt tensioner pulley counterclockwise, using the 15-mm wrench. Remove the drive belt once tension has been released.

    • 4). Unplug the voltage regulator electrical connector from the alternator.

    • 5). Remove the B+ terminal cover, the B+ terminal nut and the B+ terminal electrical connector, using the 10-mm wrench.

    • 6). Unplug the wiring harness from the side of the alternator.

    • 7). Remove the alternator bolts with the 15-mm wrench.

    • 8). Remove the alternator from the vehicle.

    Installing the Alternator

    • 1). Position the new alternator in the vehicle.

    • 2). Install and tighten the alternator bolts, using the 15-mm wrench.

    • 3). Attach the wiring harness to the alternator.

    • 4). Reinstall the B+ terminal cover, the B+ terminal nut and the B+ terminal electrical connector, using the 10-mm wrench.

    • 5). Plug in the wiring harness to the voltage regulator electrical connector.

    • 6). Reinstall the air cleaner outlet tube and the drive belt.

    • 7). Reconnect the battery ground cable.
